i arrived today by train in cordoba, 16 hours and no sleep, for 30 pesos it was worth it... i played guitar and harmonica rocking the fuck out on the train, my train car was full of hippies and artesenatos dreadlocks mate guitars it was wicked wicked wicked sweet. wine and soda all night long... when i got off the train i met a kid with 1 crazy long dreadlock a beard and a fucking seriously loaded bicycle... a kid from cordoba who returned today from 16 months argentina bolivia and brasil by bike... wicked cool kid, im with him right now at his family`s house it feels strange he hasnt seen them since bolivia so it was a crazy vuelta...

kyle... can you pass me your friends contacts in cordoba, i need to change de lugar tomorrow, i have other contacts but i remember you mentioning you guys had a friend here... im not taking route 9, im taking 137 to cafayate, passing salinas grandes... ill take off in a few days...

No matter how brilliant a filmmaker or clever a subject matter, a documentary cannot be made without the means to do so. Documentary film funding does exist, and it may take as much time, effort and talent to secure funding for documentaries as it does to complete the film.

When trying to find funding sources for documentary films, it is extremely important to concentrate your efforts in the places most likely to support your project. Plenty of research and preparation in advance can greatly increase the chances of success.

Before beginning the process to seek funding for documentaries, it helps to:

Find the target audience. The ones most likely to be interested in seeing the film will most likely be interested in contributing to documentary funding.

Determine whether this documentary is a profit or non-profit film.

Begin as much of the process for filming as possible; investors want to see commitment.

The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Find grants for documentaries through your state humanities department

There are are many national government programs, but they are commonly known and often overflowed with applicants. Apply with the state for less competition. 

I recommend: Visit your state’s website for application deadlines and requirements, or see them listed at the International Documentary Association’s website. Also check out the grants page at the Independent Feature Project's website.

Apply for major independent documentary film grants

Many organizations fund profects. Apply for the grants that may be in line with your subject matter. 

I recommend: Try the Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media and the Playboy Foundation.

Write very good documentary grants proposals

It is very important that you write in a very professional way that represents your filmmaking abilities and the passion for your documentary when applying for film grants. 

I recommend: Have a look at the Foundation Center’s reference guide for proposal writing. Also visit the National Science Foundation's Guide to Proposal Writing.

Create a business plan and budget for funding documentaries

When trying to sell the idea of your documentary to potential investors, show them a plan of exactly where there money is going. 

I recommend: Get help with a business plan at Master Plans, or see sample business plans at BulletProof Business Plans.

Try internet marketing to attract documentary filmmaking grants

The web is the best way to gain access to a lot of viewers for a small price. 

I recommend: Visit Fundable. It allows you to build a page on their website about your project and collect secure online donations from anonymous donors for any amount. Advertise on Craigslist, promising credits at the end of the film.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

Don't overlook small grants. You can use them in addition to other documentary film funding, or use multiple small grants which don't have nearly the amount of applicants to compete with.

Network, network, network. Meet everyone that you can in every way that you can, and talk about your project as much as possible to spread word of mouth.

Don't forget to include your own income when applying for documentary film grants and funding if you are looking for investors interested in financial return. They want to see a project finished fast, and that won't be accomplished when the filmmaker is working a full-time job.

.C & O Canal Way. James Putnam of Portland Or.

James Putnam. 2009 C & O Canal Way. Heading for DC.

It's muddy and moist, in the pan handle of Maryland. In the month of July. Starting in Cumberland MD, the C & O Canal Way is a Car Free bike route to Washington DC. 150 miles before the C & O canal way is the Allegany Green way, another well known " green" route to connect from Pittsburgh PA, to Cumberland, MD. A beautiful ride with camping sites along the way, as well as little towns that the route connects through, for food and supplies. 300 miles of car free touring, you might get a little muddy but its well worth the mile long tunnel in the middle of the route. The Allegany Green way is constructed over an old Rail Road, as the C & O is an old service road for the Canal that spans from Cumberland MD to Washington DC.

Find it some time and enjoy the ride. I spent a portion of a Bicycle Tour from Portland Oregon, to Portland Maine, Rode on the Green ways, from Pittsburgh to Washington DC. Then continued up the East coast for Maine.

Talking to myself

Im bleeding in my brain to talk about this insane feeding so i refrain form turning into a steam engine train, cold like the nights on a bright winter month, space out like rabbits when the wolfs come around, so I'm looking out of a window and i notice the clouds, the noise, the light, my squint, the skin around my eyes, all the birds are cooped up, some still fly, the planes going out are already in the sky, change the day as you fade away , calm the tense as you wish for warm, depress the thoughts of things ending, like your work, or your life. you're only getting older and you're more and more like your parents, with the way you think, and what you drink, and how you eat, cheap laughs get more and more out side my door there are fake little phone calls interrupting my solitude. you have me stuck inside this body and Im trying to do something incredible with it, the brain inside my brian is a beautiful combat warrior fighting to motivate a large mass of body to ultimately help it's self. people eating food, in front of my face while i serve up the coffee and the tea, swallow my tung and take their money, fall asleep and begin my morning, don't do this for too long it isn't for you, i'll continue to tell my self what to do, speed up the time that takes you away from the reality of consumerism and breath the air that the trees let you by getting back on your bike, find a shadow to follow you in the sun of the southern states, call me when you get there, I'll be waiting. Mrs. Thinking and Music can this be my girl, can this be my next year, can i hold off from certain things, like popular trends and regular meals, switch your gears and move on. Cars are going down as fast as the money is getting tight for the ones with the credit cards who finally have realized that charging their credit cards has become an overwhelming never ending task unless you win the lotto and thats unrealistic, stick to the cash, and never go credit, you'll loose your bearings and do something you don't want to like work in a fast food joint while your working the grave yard security job and on top of that sleeping for 4 hours during the day, while all your friends are out chatting about things of importance and fun, the only way to learn the social life, and with that taken away from you, your mind will ask your brain and your brain will ask your body to stop by making you sick, and tired , and emotional, and stressed out, and you'll have huge dark circles under your eyes. It feels good to know that I'm a man of constant change.

I Think i have been looking out of windows for too long and if i really want to i can break this fucking thing, I could just open it and if i can crawl out i will, let me listen to the wind and the leaves will animate that sound,my little toes will have to balance the rest of me for ever and I'm ok with that. Its been many days of open opportunity, without that how would i be set in any sort of direction Jelly on my toast, and over easy eggs to soak the bread. here in this building with walls and chairs , here in this hut with walls and chairs here in this barn with milk making cows, here in this book with words that mean something, here in this couch are germs upon germs, here in this can is yeast and hops, here in this note is love without sense, sometimes i feel like all i can do is scream but it never happens, all i can think is gray, the colors come out when i see what makes me, I'll be talking to you soon, you're doing ok.
